In the Earth Sciences, the scientists belonging to entirely different disciplines work for a common objective- understanding the earth system. During the last few decades, Earth Sciences have evolved rapidly and we are now able to provide scientific models to reconstruct and forecast the past and future processes of the planet earth through multidisciplinary research. Advances in Earth Sciences is a new book series containing selected technical papers of Earth Science India volume-I, 2008. It will also provide an opportunity to scientists of one discipline to know the developments in other disciplines and to explore the possibility of multidisciplinary research.

Advances in Earth Sciences: Series- I contains research/review papers from almost all the disciplines of earth science - geology, geophysics, oceanography, atmospheric and environmental sciences, thus fulfilling the objective of integrating basic data on earth system at a single platform. Scientists tended to split the earth system into different “spheres”. But we have now reached to a point where we must put it back together, to see how it actually works in totality. The modern earth system approach requires a comprehensive integration of existing databases. We hope this book will be a step forward in this direction.
